Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

Why have Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy with Face Matters?

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy – sometimes referred to as the ‘Vampire Facial’ – works on the principle that the body’s own healing process can slow down or even reverse the signs of ageing. This revolutionary treatment harnesses the regenerative growth factors within your own blood to improve the tone and texture of your skin, reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles, increase your skin’s natural volume by stimulating collagen production, hydrate your skin, and reduce the appearance of scar tissue.

You should experience long-lasting improvements to your skin tone, texture and colour after a single treatment. PRP Therapy is popular because it’s associated with little to no downtime and the treatment uses no synthetic products, which minimises the potential side effects.

    FAQs

How does Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy work?

Platelet Plasma is the component of blood that is known to be highly effective for treating burns and skin injuries.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy is a treatment that works by harnessing your body’s natural repair system and focusing it on areas where we want to repair and rejuvenate your skin. During the treatment, we withdraw a small amount of blood and use a centrifuge to separate the Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). The growth factors within the PRP have been shown to stimulate tissue repair, capillary formation, collagen production, and have been shown to have positive effects on skin rejuvenation.

When the PRP is injected back into your skin in the treatment areas, it triggers a reaction in the cells surround the injection site and send signals to other cells in the body to come to the treatment area.

    What areas can be treated?

PRP is particularly effective for treating the fine wrinkles under and around the eye area, which tend to be difficult to treat with other rejuvenating procedures. This treatment is also effective for treating wrinkles in other parts of your face, as well as acne scars, saggy skin, eye bags, stretch marks, and loose or wrinkled skin on your neck, décolletage or the backs of your hands.

Depending on your unique needs, it may be possible for you to combine PRP Therapy with treatments such as dermal fillers or wrinkle reducing injections.

    What happens during the treatment?

When you come in to the clinic for this treatment, we will extract a small amount of your blood (10-20ml) – in exactly the same way as blood is taken for a blood test – and place it in a centrifuge to separate Platelet Rich Plasma from your red blood cells.

Once we have your PRP, we will cleanse your skin and apply a topical anaesthetic to ensure that the procedure is as comfortable as possible. Once your skin is numb, we will gently inject the PRP into the relevant treatment areas to trigger your skin’s healing process. We use a very fine needle, but will need to give multiple injections in the various treatment areas for the best results.

When should I see results and how long will they last?

You should notice visible changes to your complexion approximately three to four weeks after your PRP Therapy, with further gradual improvements over the next few months.

Although PRP Therapy can be carried out as a single treatment, many people choose to have a top-up treatment every two to four months to maintain the results and to address new signs of ageing.

Is Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy safe?

PRP Therapy has been widely used in various medical fields, including orthopaedics, plastic surgery, dentistry, chronic wounds, and aesthetics, over the past decade. As a result, there’s an ever-growing body of literature and evidence to show that PRP can accelerate soft tissue healing and regeneration.

PRP Therapy is widely viewed as a safe procedure because it uses the patient’s own blood – this means that you are not a risk of transferable diseases, such as HIV or hepatitis. The growth factors found in PRP are the same as you would find in any normal wound on your body, expect that it contains a greater number of regeneration-supporting platelets.

There are some contraindications for PRP Therapy – these include platelet dysfunction syndrome, hemodynamic instability, critical thrombocytopenia, septicaemia, recent fever/illness, or a local infection at the injection site.

The most common side effects after PRP Therapy are minimal swelling, bruising and redness at the injection sites for 12-24 hours; you may also experience a headache. Occasionally, patients have been known to faint when their blood is taken.

More severe complications are rare, but we will discuss them with you in detail before you decide whether to have PRP Therapy.

Choosing an experienced practitioner like Dr. Tschoepe who has a proven history of successful treatments is important to minimise the risk of side effects.

What should I do immediately following my treatment?

When you come to Face Matters for PRP Therapy, we’ll give you detailed aftercare instructions, which should help to ensure that you experience excellent results. As a guide, we may advise that you:

    • Use cold compresses to treat any swelling at the injection sites.
    • Avoid touching your skin or applying any creams or make-up for six hours post treatment.
    • Wash your skin gently until any bruising subsides.
